Course Details

Welcome to the website of the Master of Science in Positive Psychotherapy!
The programme is offered at the College in collaboration with the School of Community Health and Midwifery of the State University of Central Lancashire and is the only Master's Degree in Positive Psychotherapy worldwide.
This pioneering one-year postgraduate programme combines theory with experiential education, placement and research application based on the principles of Positive Psychology and Positive Psychotherapy.
Positive Psychotherapy, unlike typical psychotherapy interventions dealing with clinical conditions, targets and enhances positive emotions, individual commitment, and the recognition and acquisition life meaning. It is defined as a "synthetic" approach that incorporates elements of a Person-Centred approach, Systemic, Psychodynamic and Cognitive-Behavioral approach and seeks to liberate man from the bonds of internal and external conflict, focusing his thinking on his strengths and virtues.
The Masters in Positive Psychotherapy is specifically designed to develop the skills required to apply the principles and methods of the Positive Psychology and Psychotherapy, both in cases of daily emotional stress and psychological distress. During the course of study, students will be trained in the basic principles of counselling and psychotherapy and subsequently in the principles of Positive Psychotherapy and its application to specific population groups.
Inter alia, it covers:
  • The theory and findings that govern the application of Positive Psychotherapy to people's daily lives
  • Development of important counselling and psychotherapy skills in order to build a successful therapeutic relationship
  • Specialized training in the approach of psychopathology from the perspective of Positive Psychotherapy
  • Skills in the Basic Principles of Positive Psychology: Positivity, Resilience, Strengths, Mindfulness, Flow
  • Skills in the Basic Principles of Positive Psychotherapy: The Hope Principle, the Balance Principle and the Consultation Principle
  • Personal development and expanded self-awareness through experiential exposure and group work
  • Specializing in cases of mourning and loss, eating disorders, family violence and conflicts, play therapy and others
  • Placement in organizations or with Professionals who are members of Hellenic Association of Positive Psychology

Entry Requirements


  • University degree, preferably in Psychology or a similar field (eg medical, nursing, social worker, sociologist etc).
  • English language comprehension of IELTS 6.5, or equivalent level. Those who have completed their graduate studies in English language are exempted
  • Successful completion of the selection process (interview and psychometric evaluation).
  • Applicants who have completed a graduate research thesis will be preferred
  • Two years of working experience are desirable, but not necessary
  • Very good knowledge (at first degree level) of Research & Methodology using SPSS. (Candidate who does not cover the criteria can attend a special intensive programme at ICPS)


COurse Structure

The programme consists of three parts. The first one includes lectures, experiential workshops and practical training that develop the general principles of counselling and psychotherapy, as well as methodology and research lectures. The second part consists of specialized lectures, seminars, experiential workshops and workshops aiming at the development of expanded skills in Positive Psychotherapy. At the same time, students attend special seminars on personal and professional development. The third part includes placement and the conduct of quantitative or qualitative research targeting to emerge the effectiveness of Positive Psychotherapy.

  • Counselling and Psychotherapy in Practice: The Principles and Skills of a Successful Mental Health Professional.
  • Comparative study and understanding of psychotherapeutic approaches in the spectrum of daily challenges up to psychological maladaptation.
  • Positive Psychology and Positive Psychotherapy: From Theory to the Applied Approach.
  • Psychopathology, Diagnosis and Positive Psychotherapeutic Intervention 
  • Positive Psychotherapy: Chronic and Terminal Illness, Abuse, Victims of sexual abuse, disaster and war survivors etc. 
  • The Solution-Focused Therapy Tools in Positive Psychotherapy
  • Personal development, self-assessment and supervision as professional tools
  • Principles and application of critical and systematic retrospect and research protocols applicable to Positive Psychotherapy
  • Professional and ethical issues related to different contexts and differentiated groups and needs
  • International perspectives and cultural differences in understanding of psychological difficulties and well-being
  • Work and goal achievement in interdisciplinary team


Academic Assessment:
Academic evaluation in this postgraduate programme includes a variety of methods: assignments, presentations, exams, case studies, role play, self-evaluation,  reports etc.
