Welcome to the website of the postgraduate programme in Person - Centred Counselling & Psychotherapy! The programme we have been offering in Greece for 25 years in collaboration with one of the most distinguished Universities of Great Britain!

This is the first Master's programme that was established in the country in this field and since then it has been a measure of comparison against other programmes in Europe, while through it, the concept of "Counselling" was established in Greece.

This three-year Master's programme offers a unique educational combination of scientific training, experiential development, practical application and research documentation. This combination leads to in-depth knowledge and experience of Person-Centred, one of the top three therapeutic approaches to mental health and well-being. Graduates of the Programme possess the necessary skills to work as Person-Centred Counsellors and Psychotherapists and to excel in the field of mental health.

Inter alia, it covers:

  • Theoretical education and training in the Principles of Person-Centred Counselling and in the philosophy that governs The Theory of Therapy and Theory of Personality.
  • The expanded and at the same time targeted personal development of each member of the educational team, with the ultimate goal of preparing for the exercise of the profession.
  • The applied experiential education in the art of Counselling and Psychotherapy and in the application of the methods of Person-Centred Counselling.
  • Intensive education in differential diagnosis and psychopathology of children and adults.
  • The training in the integration and effective use of supervision in the daily life of the professional counsellor / psychotherapist.
  • Ethical, professional and legal issues in the application of Counselling and Psychotherapy.
  • The theoretical and applied comparison between the dominant approaches and the acquisition of developed skills in understanding the ground of each approach.
  • The perfect scientific training for the purpose of successful future cooperation in an interdisciplinary context (eg cooperation with psychiatrists, teachers, social workers, etc.).

Entry Requirements

 

  • University degree, preferably in Psychology or a similar field (eg medical, nursing, social worker, sociologist etc). In case of holding a degree from different field, the application will be examined depending on the existence of other trainings or professional experience. For undergraduate students other than Psychology, additional courses are offered at ICPS. The number and subject matter of the courses are determined on a case by case basis
  • Age over 24 years
  • Good knowledge of English (the programme is offered in Greek, but knowledge of English is required for the research part of the programme).
  • Successful personal interview where the candidate is called to support his / her ability to attend Postgraduate courses within a highly experiential and academic context.
  • Successful psychometric evaluation which demonstrates the readiness of the candidate to join a highly experiential programme.

 

NOTE: This programme is a training programme in mental health counselling and psychotherapy, aimed at developing professionals in this field and is NOT aimed at anyone experiencing the current phase of their life or has experienced in the recent past any manifestation of psychological maladaptation, nor is it any form of personal or group therapy programme. This is an intensive, experiential and applied training that will expose you to stressful professional and personal development processes and is therefore contraindicated for people who experience maladaptation. If the relevant reasons are found to be relevant while you have joined the Programme, the College may ask you to temporarily or permanently discontinue your education.

 
 
 

COurse Structure

The programme lasts 3 academic years and includes 6 courses:

Theoretical Foundations in Person-Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy
Practical and Personal Development: How to Become a Person-Centred Counsellor and Psychotherapist
Theoretical Issues in Person-Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy
Professional Development in Person-Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy
Research Planning in Counselling and Psychotherapy
Research Search and Development in Counselling and Psychotherapy
 
"REDESIGN 2020" is a significant change of the programme, which from the academic year 2019-2020 is further modernized, both in content and in educational methodology and ways of evaluation, but above all, in enhancing the scientificity of graduates. In this way, it maintains its leading position among the Postgraduate programmes in Europe and America in this Approach and equips the students with all the necessary supplies to excel in the labor market!
 
1. Theoretical Training. Includes lectures, presentations, special topics from the visiting trainers, study groups, workshops, planning and elaboration of researches etc.
2. Applied Training. Includes over 50 specially designed "real-plays", at least 160 hours of internship and 40 hours of supervision
3. Experiential Development. Includes specially designed encounters. Based on the latest research discoveries for the optimal methodology of their application in the training of counsellors and psychotherapists, as well as specialised exercises during the training sessions.
4. Professional Identity. Includes a special personalised programme of professional development, professional goal setting and cultivation of professional skills
 
The subjects of postgraduate programme, inter alia, include:
 
  • Conditions of the Person-Centred Approach and their application: Experiential education.
  • Counselling and psychotherapy skills: From the formal session in cyberspace.
  • Counselling in special groups: Children, adults, patients, offenders.
  • Counselling in different contexts: Similarities, differences, requirements, skills.
  • Real-Plays: Laboratories of Empathy, Authenticity, Therapeutic Responses, Counselling and Facilitation of Therapeutic Groups.
  • Differential diagnosis, psychopathology of children and adults and Person-Centred Counselling & Psychotherapy.
  • Psychometric evaluation and tools: Applications in Person-Centred Therapy.
  • Person-Centred philosophy and other Approaches: Similarities, differences, advantages, disadvantages.
  • Special topics: Crisis intervention (suicide, domestic violence, natural disaster, war, etc.), Mourning and loss, Eating Disorders, Play Therapy, Expressive Arts, Gender and Diversity, Sexual Disorders, etc.
  • Code of ethics and ethics: The rules of the profession.
  • Applied research in the therapeutic process.

 

Academic Assessment:

 
Academic evaluation in this postgraduate programme includes a variety of methods: assignments, presentations, exams, case studies, role play, self-assessment, personal development reports, etc.
 
 

Entry Requirements

Graduates of the programme in Person-Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy can work in public and private institutions such as:

  • Mental health organizations
  • Detoxification organizations
  • Organizations supporting vulnerable groups
  • Organizations offering counselling services to vulnerable groups
  • NGO providing services to refugees
  • Schools, counselling centers and business settings
  • Human Resources management departments

 

Their thorough training in the subject of Counselling enables them to work in any work environment where mental health services are provided.

Of course, another activity for graduates of the programme is the exercise of the profession by providing psychological and psychotherapeutic services. 
 
The programme, in addition, allows anyone who wishes to continue their studies at the Doctoral level in Universities abroad.
